The Far Cry series is one of the pioneers in open-world first-person shooters, first beginning during the 6th console generation and continuing as one of publisher and developer Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. Releasing March 27, 2018, Far Cry 5 is the 5th game in the series and the third title to continue the template that began with the groundbreaking Far Cry 3, which introduced skill trees and RPG-style character progression into the series’ open-world FPS format. This pivotal installment in the Far Cry series puts players in the shoes of a deputy sheriff as they hope to infiltrate the fictional region of Hope County, Montana and disrupt the activities of a sinister doomsday cult known as The Project.
Like the previous Far Cry games, Far Cry 5 shares no connection to its predecessors or follow-up Far Cry 6 outside of each game featuring the same blend of open-world shooting, stealth, and gradual map completion through assisting the local populace. However, Far Cry 5 is one of the few games in the series to receive a direct sequel to the events of its story in the post-apocalyptic Far Cry: New Dawn. Accordingly, reception to Far Cry 5 is fairly positive, with many reviewers praising the game’s story and excellent antagonists (a trend in Far Cry games), though other critical and audience reviews point out that the series’ formula is beginning to feel a little too long in the tooth by the 5th entry.
Far Cry 5 Premise
Players begin Far Cry 5 as a young deputy sheriff in the neighboring county to the fictional Hope County, Montana as they join a group of law enforcement officials and federal agents planning to make an arrest of a dangerous cult leader. The leader, Joseph Seed, is holed up with his followers at the Eden’s Gate compound, and the intelligence community gathers information that leads them to believe Seed is planning an act of domestic terrorism on American soil. Predictably, things go south quickly during the planned arrest, with the player character barely escaping with their lives and linking up with a ragtag group of resistance fighters hoping to urge their community of the violent religious cult.
In terms of gameplay, Far Cry 5 offers much of the same that players of Far Cry 3 and 4 have experienced before. Players will take on missions that advance the story, but in between those main story missions will need to gather support from the locals and enhance their combat skills. To do this, players will need to systematically clear the cult from sections of the map by activating radio towers, destroying enemy outposts, and completing favors for the local denizens. Accordingly, completing these tasks rewards the player with skill points which they can use to enhance a variety of attributes related to firearms handling, stealth, or survival.

Though Far Cry 5 can fit squarely into the FPS and action RPG genres, the Far Cry series has traditionally placed a premium on featuring interesting characters and conflicts as their defining qualities.
