Gamefly Goes Digital

Gamefly Goes Digital

None

No one has been able to put a dent in Steam’s digital distribution service sales numbers so far. Quite frankly, Steam did it right the first time, offering pretty much any PC game you could want at a fraction of the price you would pay otherwise. Well, now direct-to-door rental service Gamefly is going to try to challenge this online game distribution behemoth through a digital distribution service of its own.

Step one: Gamefly will buy Direct2Drive from IGN.
Step two: Gamefly will expand their rental service to PC games.
Step three: Gamefly will offer “digital rentals” which allow you to play a PC game for a limited time at a smaller price point.
Step four: Profit.

Recent reports stated that Direct2Drive was attempting to launch its own digital rental service before Gamefly looked to pick them up. If this is true, it’s very likely that Gamefly will simply use the pre-existing architecture to kick off their service.

Honestly, we just hope that Gamefly will somehow expand their digital rental service to consoles. I can’t think of any better business model than allowing me to pay a monthly fee and just download a game when I want to play it. That way I wouldn’t spend as much time at the used game shelves.
