GameStop Begins Offering Digital Pre-Orders For PC Titles

None

It looks like GameStop has put together a plan that will extend their reach into the PC gaming market without having to expand their inventory. Today, the retailer announced that it would begin accepting pre-orders for a digitally downloadable copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Customers have always been able to purchase downloadable content from GameStop for their consoles, but expanding this to include PC games breaks new ground for the retailer. The maneuver also shows a certain amount of forward thinking on GameStop’s part. When you consider how PC gamers have embraced digital marketplaces like Steam, adopting an in-store digital marketplace could save them from a Blockbuster Video-like demise.

Steve Nix, GameStop’s Manager of Digital Distribution, weighs in: “This is a great illustration of how the digital distribution model and in-store experience really complement one another,” he said. “We have seen great success selling DLC for console titles in our stores, so expanding on that model and helping customers discover digitally distributed PC games in stores is a natural fit.”

Customers will also be able to use alternate payment methods, like trade-ins and gift cards, to purchase the downloadable games.
