GameStop Buys Kongregate

GameStop Buys Kongregate

None

Today, GameStop has purchased the online browser gaming hub Kongregate. Why would a chain best known for their numerous retail stores and used game business want to purchase a free-to-play Flash game site? GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines stated “Kongregate advances GameStop’s digital strategy by providing a gaming platform for casual, mobile and browser games that can be promoted and played by our existing gamers. We welcome the Kongregate team to the GameStop family.” when talking with GamesIndustry.biz.

Raines continued “Acquiring Kongregate strengthens GameStop’s digital platform and its commitment to become the gaming aggregator of choice.” While we aren’t entirely sure how the two companies will be working together, GameStop seems to believe that this purchase will greatly help the retailer in the online space. We’ll just have to wait to see what comes out of this acquisition in the future.
