Little Big Adventure is a 1994 action-adventure game developed by Adeline Software International and published by Electronic Arts for European releases as well as Activision across North America, Asia, and Oceania. Its release across platforms was extremely staggered. First, it was released for MS-DOS, eventually coming to PC and PlayStation. It even received an Android and iOS release back in 2014.
There’s a reason the game has been revived on modern platforms. Critically, Little Big Adventure was a hit, with many reviewers charmed by the game. This translated to strong sales too, with over 500,000 copies worldwide as of 1999. Despite this, these sales came mainly from international markets, with the U.S. version of the game proving to be a commercial flop.
Little Big Adventure Premise
Little Big Adventure is an isometric adventure that gives you the freedom to roam around most of the world. The game features plenty of puzzles to bypass, many of which utilize the ‘behavior modes.’ These different behavior modes (Normal, Athletic/Sporty, Aggressive, and Discreet) allow you to change the protagonist’s abilities and interactions with the world. The reward for completing these puzzles is often more exploration, with more of the world unlocking as you progress further into the game.
Little Big Adventure also has a unique combat system, which sees you throw a Magic Ball toward enemies. The trajectory and effectiveness are affected by the behavior mode you’re in, giving that mechanic another use. Alternatively, using the Aggressive stance allows you to engage in melee combat, although this is considerably less effective against some of the game’s enemies.
A lot of the game’s appeal comes from its visual charm than its mechanical brilliance.
Little Big Adventure Main Characters
The story of Little Big Adventure isn’t the most profound. However, it is certainly enough to remain engaging throughout, complimenting the gameplay with a fun story. Equally, the cast of characters remains really small, with just a few main players to speak of.
Here are the characters you need to know about in Little Big Adventure:
- Twinsen: Twinsen is the protagonist of Little Big Adventure. He begins the game incarcerated after having prophetic dreams foreseeing the end of the world. Twinsen goes on a mission to save both his girlfriend, Zoe, and the world from the evil Dr. FunFrock.
- Zoe: Zoe is Twinsen’s girlfriend. She is arrested by Dr. FunFrock, and becomes Twinsen’s key motivation to stop the tyrant.
- Dr. FunFrock: Dr. FunFrock is an evil tyrant who terrorizes the planet Twinsun, as well as the main antagonist of the game. He has created an army of evil clones to help subject the world to his reign of terror.
Little Big Adventure Titles in the Series
Strong sales for the original game meant that Little Big Adventure was given a sequel. This second game, released in 1997, was received similarly to the original, and the sales were around the same, too. Despite this, it proved to be the end of the line for the series, and it hasn’t been seen since.
The source code for both games was released in 2021. Besides this, the series has been dormant for a very long time. We’ve got no reason to believe a comeback is planned, either. It was very much a product of its time, and perhaps the past is where it should remain.
