Mario Teaches Typing Cheats & Cheat Codes for PC

Mario Teaches Typing is a 1992 educational game developed and published by Interplay Productions. The game was originally released for MS-DOS PCs and Windows, with a Macintosh release arriving later in 1995. Nowadays, it’s easy to access online, with multiple versions of the game available to play via browser.

Mario Teaches Typing combines the gameplay of the Super Mario series with learning how to type faster. You’re presented with a level that resembles a Mario game, with your chosen character moving right by themselves. Eventually, you meet an enemy, who are assigned a letter (Level 1), word (Level 2), or sentence (Level 3). You must then type this out as fast as you can, with as few mistakes as possible. Once this is complete, you’ll move on to the next enemy, until the level reaches its conclusion.

At the end of every level, you are presented with a screen telling you your error rate and your words per minute (WPM). The difficulties will likely have a huge effect on this, determining whether you need to type letters, words, or sentences.

Ultimately, the intention of the Mario theme was to make the learning experience palatable to children, in a world where computer typing was becoming increasingly important. Nowadays, in a world where the ability to type at pace is essential to plenty of computer-facing roles, there are adults whose job performance can be improved from playing Mario Teaches Typing on their PC over 30 years ago. It’s a better legacy than most games could hope for.

Ever since his debut in the Donkey Kong arcade game, Mario has established himself as arguably the biggest name in gaming. No one can live up to his iconic status among gamers, with plenty of releases in the series to this day.

However, Mario Teaches Typing is very much its own thing. With the series being developed and published by Interplay Productions (also known for creating Fallout), Nintendo’s involvement here is restricted to just the licensing of the titular character. As a result, it’s hard to say that Mario Teaches Typing is truly part of the Super Mario series.

This particular series got just two releases. Mario Teaches Typing 2 was released in 1997, but after the release of Super Mario 64, nothing was ever the same with an explosion in popularity. It’s understandable that Nintendo became more protective over its golden goose from that point onwards.

  • Mario Teaches Typing 2 (1997)
