Microsoft Set to Launch Minecraft Education Edition

Microsoft has just acquired a new IP: MinecraftEdu. This popular software was designed by educators and has already been put to great use in classrooms across the country. MinecraftEdu was formerly owned by TeacherGaming, which was founded after the initial success of the popular sandbox variant. It originated with second-grade educator Joel Levin and was already fully supported by Mojang. Microsoft has seen the immense potential Minecraft can have to impact classrooms all over the world, and will soon release Minecraft Education Edition.

“One of the reasons Minecraft fits so well in the classroom is because it’s a common, creative playground,” Mojang’s COO said in a statement. “We’ve seen that Minecraft transcends the differences in teaching and learning styles and education systems around the world. It’s an open space where people can come together and build a lesson around nearly anything.” Minecraft Education Edition will launch over the summer with a free trial, and will be free for a year for existing MinecraftEdu users. The software suite will be enhanced by a supportive online community of experienced users so that newcomers will have no shortage of guidance or assistance.
