Nintendo Files Bowser Trademark

Nintendo Files Bowser Trademark

Here’s something interesting that should fuel years of pent-up wishful thinking from Nintendo fans. Nintendo has filed for a trademark for “Koopa.” Koopa of course being the Japanese name for Bowser, the greatest villain of all-time [Citation Needed].

News of the trademark is making the public rounds this week, but the application was sent on February 24. It’s for a number of uses, including “program for home video game console etc” and “clothing etc.”

Time for speculation! Of course, the immediate point to make is that these kinds of trademark applications happen all the time and often don’t go anywhere. But this is Nintendo and a character-specific filing is really interesting. After all, is Bowser not already included in Super Mario -branded merchandise?

The possibility of Bowser getting his own game (or heck, even Bowser-only merchandise gimmicks) is enticing. Bowser is one of the most enduring video game characters, alongside Mario and Donkey Kong, and has long been known for having a super fun personality in games like Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario .

After years of characters like Wario having their own games, why not take a chance with giving Bowser a leading role? Let’s pay close attention to events like E3 going forward.
