RUMOR: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Cancelled And GSC Closed?

None

Ukrainian development studio GSC Game World appears to be closing its doors and taking S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 along with it. With the company’s official Twitter first posting and then deleting a denial, the veracity of claims by alleged (former) employees of GSC is still uncertain, but here’s what is known:

  • Dmitri Bourkovski, though not an employee of GSC Game World, made one of the initial tweets about the closure. He supposedly knows employees and is therefore privy to such information. This reeks of “my cousin’s step-father works at Nintendo,” but…

  • He isn’t the only person making such claims, and some of the others are apparently GSC employees. There’s little way, however, to confirm that these people are members of GSC.

  • Sergey Galenkin, of 1C Ukraine, has written a blog post in which he muses about the possible reasons behind GSC’s collapse. As someone in the industry in the same area as Kiev-based GSC Game World, it’s likely that he has the knowledge and connections to verify whether or not these claims of closure are coming from real employees.

If this is true, it’s a sad day indeed. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was an incredibly unique series of first-person adventure/survival/shooters, which provided an experience that was at once engaging, unsettling and extremely malleable. We’ll have more on this situation when official word comes out, one way or the other.
