It had to happen sooner or later: with the Wii U physically present at last year’s E3, and rumors flying left and right about the Xbox 360’s eventual successor, it was only a matter of time until thoughts turned to Sony and its inevitable follow-up to the PlayStation 3. Cue the purported reveal of its development name and details both of its supposed construction and proposed features. The development name is said to be “Orbis,” from the Latin for “circle” or “orbit.” It would fit with Sony’s recent release of the Vita, its own name drawn from that same, dead language. The current word is that the console will have a CPU based on the AMD x64 architecture and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, capable of display resolutions up to 4096×2160. For those keeping score, that’s twice the vertical resolution of 1080p.
We would like to remind everyone that this is, as of now, all rumor and speculation. That includes the Orbis’ supposed release window of holiday 2013, putting it over a year and a half away even if these rumors prove to be true. By Shelby Reiches |
