Shigeru Miyamato Took Issue with GoldenEye

GoldenEye for Nintendo’s N64 was one of the first successful multiplayer shooters to grace a home console. According to a report by The Guardian, this influential title caused concern for Nintendo’s iconic designer, Shigeru Miyamato.

The violence contained in GoldenEye was the primary issue Miyamato took with the game. Nintendo consoles had a history of being family friendly, and he was afraid that all the close quarters killing featured in the game would leave a bad impression. He gave Rare some feedback, saying that it might be nice if Bond shook hands with all the supposedly killed enemies in a hospital at the end of the game.

Co-designer, Martin Hollis paid very little attention to this feedback, possessing a very different vision for the game. In his view, the game’s filmic nature was enough to emphasize just how artificial the violence was.

Luckily, the final game Rare created was a hit, and didn’t pull the punches Miyamoto suggested they pull. Who knows where gamers would be without the boost GoldenEye gave us in our early days?
