There have been a lot of costume and pose changes for video game heroines lately, but here’s one alteration you might not even notice. Square Enix is working on Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness for the PlayStation 4 and decided Miki, the game’s lead heroine, needed a little different look. In anticipation of possible backlash outside of Japan, Square Enix has changed the underwear she’ll wear in the game.
So, why does this matter? Well, in Japanese games there can be upskirt shots as form of fanservice. Originally, Miki seemed to be wearing slightly more revealing, white underwear. Now, she wears a pair that covers her entire butt. Which you’ll only see if you’re really playing with the camera, because she’s wearing a decent length skirt and all. The reasoning behind the change is due to her being a teenager and the developer wanting to avoid criticism.
For people who are concerned, know that Fiore’s outfit in Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness will not be altered. She’s the witch in the screenshot above whose checkerboard outfit shows plenty of skin.
