Steam Coming to Macs?

None

Over on the Steampowered forums (as brought to our attention by Kotaku and Gizmodo) Steam, the video game digital distribution service from Valve, may in fact be on its way to an Apple Macintosh near you.

Apparently, Steam forum member warriorlax5506 culled through the recent Steam Beta code program files folder and found 10 instances where the prefix “osx” was used for graphics files: osx_close_def, osx_close_down, osx_close_hov, osx_max_def, osx_max_down, osx_max_hov, osx_min_def, osx_min_down, osx_min_hov, and osx_win_dis.

Also, according to another user on the forum, “There is also an osx.menu file in the C:\SteamResourceMenus, which contains definitions for standard OSX menus.”

While it’s likely a Mac version of Steam will hit the platform, don’t expect incompatible Windows-made games to run; this is likely a future implementation that will specifically support Mac compatible games going forward.
