Ubisoft Says Watch_Dogs Will Be The Same Regardless Of Hardware

Third-party developers have openly expressed their continued support of current-gen situations even after the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One. Fundamentally, as we’ve said before, this is a good thing; it means gamers won’t have their hands forced into next-gen systems. However, it also runs the risk of undermining the value of next-gen gaming due to hardware limitations mandated by a lowered common denominator.

Interestingly, developer Ubisoft doesn’t seem to think so, despite heading up two cross-gen projects: Watch_Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag . A recent blog post from Ubisoft senior producer Dominic Guay claims that, whether it’s played on current- or next-gen hardware, Watch_Dogs will be “the same game.”

“On current-gen systems we may need to cut down the number of people on the street a little, but it’s still the same game,” Guay continued. In defense of their decision to release on multiple generations, Guay explained that “We knew we would have next-gen hardware coming out before we ship, but we started off knowing we wanted to support PS3 and Xbox 360.”

I’m not one to gripe about 70FPS versus 60FPS, nor do I expect a slightly sparser cityscape to ruin Watch_Dogs . However, next-gen developers ( including Evolution Studios …ehem, Driveclub definitely need to work on their definition of “the same.”
