Earlier today, Microsoft announced via its Xbox Wire news website that an Xbox One Digital TV Tuner option is now available for preview members. Customers who decide to purchase the Hauppauge WinTV-955Q for $79.99 will be able to watch local broadcast networks for free with no added monthly subscription costs. Alternatively, Microsoft also announced that it is working with the company to release an even cheaper TV tuner later this year for $59.99.
Both tuners are great options for those who aim to use their Xbox One consoles mainly for entertainment purposes. Several apps such as Sling TV, Netflix, HBO GO, and Hulu Plus can also be used as alternative solutions for those who don’t want to invest in either tuner right now.
Like so many others, I currently don’t have a cable subscription and see a great benefit in making full use of the services listed above. While this new tuner option might not shake things up too much, it does serve as just another clear example of why cable subscription services aren’t needed.
