Yesterday, Major Nelson confirmed via Twitter that Microsoft’s Games with Gold promotion is coming to the Xbox One in 2014. For those who are unfamiliar with this service, Xbox Live gold subscribers are granted access to at least two free games each and every month. Games with Gold originally debuted on the Xbox 360 back in July when Assassin’s Creed II was made freely available to customers through the Xbox Live Marketplace.
While this promo has been good for some, a majority of the games being released are either too old or have already been played through by virtually everyone. By comparison, Sony’s PlayStation Plus service still remains the best value for free games, and I firmly expect that trend to continue well into next-gen. Microsoft’s decision to make this announcement yesterday is especially interesting because it suggests that it wants to compete with PS Plus on a much larger scale. Knowing that 360 games aren’t yet compatible with the Xbox One platform means that Microsoft is really going to have to do a better job at releasing some compelling content from here on out. In any case, this was a wise move that will ultimately leave many curious to see how it all turns out.
The Xbox One hits stores on November 22 nd .
