Nintendo Trademarks Japanese Deities?

Nintendo Trademarks Japanese Deities?

None

Internet users had a collective chuckle when Nintendo tried to trademark the phrase “It’s on like Donkey Kong!,” but now it seems Nintendo has its eye on trademarking a much higher power. Nintendo filed a Japanese patent application for “Ameratsu” which is widely known as the first name of the goddess Ameratsu Omikami. Although there are other uses for the name Ameratsu outside of referring to the goddess, in Japanese culture the name is closely intertwined with spirituality.

Though the trademark office has not approved or denied the application yet, it seems unlikely that they would approve a trademark that has such strong connotations outside the gaming industry. Although the game “Okami” does draw from this goddess’ history, it definitely isn’t the final word on it.
