Blizzard Disappointed in Valve

None

Last week Valve announced plans to develop and release an updated version of Defense of the Ancients, which originally began as a Warcraft III mod. As with any game being developed for the retail market, the name of the game is going through the trademarking process. Although this is standard operating procedure in the video game world, Blizzard says that it is disappointed in Valve’s decision to pursue a trademark, saying:

“[We feel] a little bit of confusion, to be honest. Certainly, DOTA came out of the Blizzard community… It just seems a really strange move to us that Valve would go off and try to exclusively trademark the term considering it’s something that’s been freely available to us and everyone in the Warcraft III community up to this point.”

Although Valve has not responded to these remarks, the trademark application is still active, so it is unlikely that anything will be done about Blizzard’s hard feelings regarding the DOTA trademark.
