Pokémon Unite is a multiplayer online battle arena that launched on July 21, 2021, for the Nintendo Switch and on September 22, 2021, for iOS and Android. The game was developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by The Pokémon Company. This unique addition to the Pokémon franchise brings MOBAs to a new audience.
While Pokémon Unite received mixed reviews, it won “Mobile Game of the Year” at the D.I.C.E 25th Annual Awards in 2022. The game also won the Game of the Year in Google Play’s Game Awards for 2021.
Pokémon Unite Premise
Pokémon Unite takes place on a mythical island called Aeos Island which rests in unexplored frontiers of the ocean. The game featured two teams of five Pokémon face off in a battle to see not only who is stronger but who can be tactical in outmaneuvering their opponent. Each match lasts a total of ten minutes and the team with the highest overall score wins.
Unlike previous games in the Pokémon franchise, there are none of the traditional Pokémon “types” or elemental advantages. Now Pokémon are categorized in Battle Types: Attacker, Defender, Speedster, Supporter, and All-Rounder.
Unlike other MOBAs, Pokémon Unite does not offer an in-game scoreboard. Instead, it encourages the teams with phrases like “We’re in the lead!” and “We’re struggling to keep up!” With faster matches and simpler gameplay, this Pokémon-based MOBA makes the genre more digestible for newer players or those who found other battle arenas too complex and discouraging.
Pokémon Unite Main Character
Pokémon Unite lets the player create their trainer at the beginning of the game with multiple different faces, hairstyles, and other customizing options. However, the real focus of the game is the Pokémon the player controls. The player starts with a relatively weak Pokémon but they have the opportunity to gain new “moves” and grow stronger. This is done by capturing wild Pokémon, helping their teammate defeat wild Pokémon, and knocking out an enemy player’s Pokémon. With over 50 playable Pokémon and 5 Battle Types, there is bound to be a Pokémon players will feel drawn to. Each one is unique with its own move set and ultimate ability known as their “Unite Move”.
Pokémon Unite Series
Pokémon Unite is a stand-alone spinoff game with no prequels or sequels at this point in time. The developer however has a very long history of making games in a multitude of different genres. If the gameplay in Pokémon Unite interests you, you should check out some of TiMi Studio’s other games.
