Redecor: Home Design Makeover is a 2020 interior design game developed and published by Reworks. The game allows players to take a standard room and redesign it to their own liking, all from the comfort of their mobile device. Best of all, it’s a free-to-play title, meaning you can dip your toe into this home design title without spending a cent.

You begin your adventure by selecting a single room, and you’re given a ton of options to choose from such as living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and more. With every room comes a specific theme, and a set of requirements that you must fulfill to ‘finish’ the room. This can include a color scheme, using specific furniture, or simply adding certain aspects like floor treatments.
To help your process, you’re given a huge catalog of furniture to choose from, and various decor items, flooring, and wallpapers. You can switch these out to further match the aesthetic you’re aiming for, allowing you to quickly and easily build a room with a cohesive visual style. Unfortunately, it’s not all free. The game offers a huge amount of in-game purchases, usually coming in the form of new pieces of furniture that you can then use in all of your rooms.
Unlike most design games, Redecor: Home Design Makeover puts an emphasis on competitive play. You can enter design competitions, where your rooms are voted on by the community against other players. This can reward you with in-game currency, depending on how well you perform against your competitors.

Some design games out there use fun cartoon characters to introduce players to the mechanics. However, that just isn’t the case here. Redecor: Home Design Makeover drops you right into the design experience, with no sign of a character or NPC in sight. It really just isn’t that type of game, nor does it need to be. It commits to the no-character approach, and ultimately benefits from that choice.

With the release of the original game being relatively recent in 2020, there has been no desire from Reworks to begin work on a sequel at the moment. It makes sense – there’s a unique formula there that is already close to being the best it can be. There’s certainly no pressing desire from the player base for massive overhauls to the gameplay.
Right now, updates to the base game adding new pieces of furniture works perfectly find for what it is trying to achieve. Perhaps that will change in the future, but there’s been no indication of that any time soon.
