RUMOR: Square Enix May Be Having An Identity Crisis

None

Do you remember the days before Square Enix came along and combined two of the greatest JRPG juggernauts in gaming history under one label? What had previously been Squaresoft and Enix—two companies most famous for the competing brands of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, respectively—became one monolithic enterprise under which both developers/publishers, along with several smaller RPG houses, were gathered.

Fast forward to today, when a trademark was discovered for “Square,” filed by Square Enix. Further community investigation has revealed that the description of this new trademark is very similar to that of Square Enix, leading to speculation that this filing represents a rebranding effort on the part of Square Enix. With no word yet from Square Enix on the filing, which is hardly a rock-solid confirmation of any naming shenanigans, it’s impossible to say whether this is what it appears to be or, in fact, has any actual bearing on the company’s direction.
