Sony Sells PC Business, Prepares for Layoffs

Sony Sells PC Business, Prepares for Layoffs

Sony has revealed invasive changes to its business plans today. While the PlayStation 4 is still selling well, Sony’s PC and TV businesses are being overhauled.

First of all, Sony is giving up on the PC business. They are selling the PC division and instead focusing on their lineup of mobile products. Japan Industrial Partners INC will be purchasing Sony’s VAIO PC brand. At the same time, Sony will be making a serious change to its TV division, in that its TV division won’t strictly be Sony anymore. Instead, it will spin off its TV division into a subsidiary company, that is still owned by Sony. The new subsidiary will focus on high end TV models, including Sony’s 4k ultra HD lineup. The sale of Sony’s PC division and the restructuring of their TV division will take place in March and July respectively.

And you all know what this means–layoffs! Sony is expecting to lay off nearly 5,000 employees worldwide as a result of these new changes. 1,500 of these layoffs will be in Japan alone. Sorry Sony workers, looks like your livelihood is going to be put in jeopardy so we can cram some more pixels onto a screen.
