PS2 Hits 50 Million Sold in North America

In an interview with Gamasutra, Sony’s John Koller made some revealing statements concerning the PS2’s present and future.

For one, the PS2’s business continues to be insanely robust. In fact, the PS2 has recently surpassed the 50 million units sold mark in North America and nearly 150 million units worldwide.

Referring to Sony’s sentiments concerning the ageing rig, Koller stated “the only way to kill the PS2 business is to stop supporting it.” He continued by foreshadowing what’s to come: “With the lineup for 2009 and 2010, the PS2 is not going away anytime soon.”

However, if you were hoping for a price cut to replace your huge brick, to get rid of read errors, or to simply finally jump in, guess again. Koller stated that the current $129.99 is right where it needs to be. “We’ve looked at a variety of options, and I think we’re pleased with where we are; it’s a significant financial contributor for us and it sells very well at $129.99. We’re comfortable with the current price.”
