Xbox One May Kick You Offline for Cloud Updates

Xbox One May Kick You Offline for Cloud Updates

According to Xbox Live Lead Program Manager John Bruno, the Xbox One may have to kick you offline for updates now and again. “Once in a while,” Bruno said, “Rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted, whether your code is running or not. That’s a problematic thing for a game, and is oftentimes is in the middle of a multiplayer session, we’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case.”

Normally, this isn’t a big issue. Sure you might be annoyed that your 20 killstreak in Call of Duty was interrupted but it’s not the end of the world. However, certain games, like MMOs, need to be online in order to operate. In fact, one of the biggest upcoming titles, Titanfall, is a multiplayer game only, so it likely won’t even function when the Xbox One is updating.

What does this mean for the future of online console gaming? We aren’t particularly sure. It would be nice if Microsoft gave us a choice to delay OS updates, but then we wouldn’t be able to connect to Xbox Live anyway. We will bring you more information on the Xbox One’s capabilities when it launches on November 22.
