Hybrid Chip Key to Redesigned Xbox 360

None

When redesigning a console to make it smaller, the innards of the system must change as well. Such is the case with the new Xbox 360 S, ditching the separate CPU and GPU of the previous models for a chip that combines the two. The name of this new chip is the “Vejle,” and some of its more important aspects were recently outlined by VentureBeat (via 1Up).

Besides being fifty percent smaller, allowing for its inclusion in a smaller console, the new chip has several other benefits. For one, it is much more power efficient, reducing power consumption of the Xbox 360 S by sixty percent when compared to older systems. The “Vejle” also helps put a stop to the “Red Ring of Death” issue of older consoles, since this problem was caused by the older console’s graphics chips warping on the motherboard due to excessive heat. Microsoft even claims the redesigned console’s fans don’t need to exceed fifty-five percent of its capacity to keep things cool.
