Lemmings is a puzzle-strategy game that is one of the progenitors of the incredibly popular RTS (real-time strategy) genre. Lemmings was originally released for the Amiga, a personal computer, on 14 February 1991. This widely beloved game was developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis.
Over the years, Lemmings has maintained its popularity and critical acclaim. Lemmings is one of the most ported games to exist. It’s appeared on over twenty different consoles, including the NES, Mega Drive, and PlayStation Portable. Lemmings has sold over 20 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of the early 1990s.
Lemmings Premise
Lemmings is based on the widely known myth about the animals that they display strong suicidal behavior. In this game, players must guide a group of lemmings through a deadly obstacle course, saving as many lemmings as possible. There are a number of different ways that these lemmings can die, including falling, drowning, and fire. Each level in the game is categorized into four different difficulties groups -“Fun”, “Tricky”, “Taxing” and “Mayhem”.
Lemmings Characters
In order to save the titular lemmings, players must assign a limited number of eight different skills to specific lemmings. These skills allow the lemmings to clear traps and obstacles or create safe paths to the level exit. Certain rolls like the Blockers can affect the behavior of other lemmings by turning them in the opposite direction. Here is a list of every skill in the game:
- Climber: scale vertical walls regardless of height, but they will fall if they hit the ceiling.
- Floater: survive a fall of any height by using an umbrella to land safely.
- Bomber: vibrates and explodes, creating a hole in the ground.
- Blocker: stands still, turning around other lemmings that run into it.
- Builder: create a diagonal staircase upwards, consisting of twelve bricks.
- Basher: digs a horizontal tunnel through any surface except for steel.
- Miner: digs a diagonal tunnel downwards through any surface except for steel.
- Digger: digs a vertical tunnel downwards through any surface except for steel.
