Nintendo Counters Rumors Of Wii U Basic Discontinuation

Nintendo Counters Rumors Of Wii U Basic Discontinuation

Yesterday, we reported on a rumor that GameStop would be returning its remaining stock of Wii U Basic consoles. The 8GB model of the console has proven less popular than its 32GB “Deluxe” counterpart. Though GameStop still has yet to comment on the supposed internal memo, Nintendo has issued a vocal denial of any intention to discontinue the model.

“There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware,” begins a statement from Nintendo. “Nintendo is working with retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available.”

This seems a tacit confirmation of the GameStop recall, though it raises questions as to its actual purpose. Is Nintendo attempting to clear up retailer shelf space for the more popular Deluxe model? Are the basic consoles going to be redistributed to locations in which they are disproportionately popular, if such regions exist? Time will tell.
