As reported by Game Informer on Sunday, June 29, an image of Planetary Annihilation cropped up on Reddit recently (as featured above), depicting a boxed copy of the Steam Early Access game being sold at a retailer.
” At Uber we’ve been trying really hard to innovate on business models during the entire development of [Planetary Annihilation] . ” One of Planetary Annihilation’s directors–Jan Mavor–wrote to Game Informer when broached about the image.
” We had planned to do a retail release all along and the early access box came about as part of our experimental attitude, ”Mavor continued . “ Since early access works so well, our partners at Nordic thought that it would be worth trying an early access retail edition and we agreed it was a cool idea. ”
When questioned about releasing an unfinished game at retail, Mavor’s response was: ” the real question is, why not? After all, they are getting the same game, just earlier. It’s a changing world and we hope to continue trying out new and innovative ways to make games. ”
Planetary Annihilation was successfully funded on Kickstarter back in 2012, out of an initial goal of $900,000, Uber’s crowdfunding campaign ended up with $2,229,344 by the end of the Kickstarter. A real-time strategy game at its heart, Planetary Annihilation ’s development team also consists of former developers behind Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander .
Planetary Annihilation is currently available on Steam’s Early Access for £29.99, or your regional equivalent.
