Shepard Shoots For Gender Equality

Shepard Shoots For Gender Equality

None

Too long has the rugged mug of the standard, male model for Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard been the sole beneficiary of media attention. Appearing in screenshots, in artwork, and even as the exclusive representation of the Commander on all previous Mass Effect covers, his face has become synonymous with the series as a whole.

Yet players of the Mass Effect games have always been able to select and design a female Shepard, voiced by Jennifer Hale, as their avatar in the world of Mass Effect. However, she has been absent from demos and media surrounding the games to the point where it’s hard to picture what the “standard” female Shepard model looks like.

That changes with Mass Effect 3. Purchasers of the collector’s edition of the title will find their box art graced with the affectionately fan-titled FemShep’s figure. In a game that promises to introduce male, same-sex relationships to the series, FemShep’s appearance and codification seems a logical decision.
