When spending money it’s important to ensure you’re getting what you paid for. New controllers are not cheap and with all the options available it’s easy to make the wrong decision. Is It Compatible?

The first thing you should always be asking before purchasing a new controller is “Is it compatible with the platform I intend to use it on?

The Xbox Core Controller is compatible with the Xbox Series X|S, mobile devices (iOS and Android), and PC. The controller is also compatible with the previous generation of Xbox consoles. The Core Controller is perfect for those needing an extra controller for these consoles and it comes in a variety of colors. The controller is even compatible with Nintendo Switch through the 8bitdo USB Dongle.

Is It Wired or Wireless?

Some consumers might prefer one of these options over the other. It’s important to ask whether a controller is wired or wireless.

The Xbox Core Controller allows for both wired and wireless play through a USB-C cable that is not included with the purchase. If you prefer wired controllers then there are other cheaper options available but if you prefer wireless this might be a best of both worlds option since it allows for both.

Battery Life?

For those extended gaming sessions, the last thing you want is for your controller to die on you. This is why it’s important to ask “How long does the controller’s battery last on a single charge?”

This controller lasts for approximately 30 hours on a single charge but attaching a headset to it can drain the battery faster. Luckily, with the controller’s USB-C port, you can quickly charge it back to full.

Is The Controller Comfortable?

An underrated question when it comes to any peripheral is the ergonomics. If you ask “Is the controller comfortable? usually the clerk at your store of choice will have one on hand for you to hold.

If you have been using Xbox controllers primarily for gaming then the Xbox Core Controller will be the best feeling yet. Fans of PlayStation or Nintendo controllers might take some time adjusting but the Xbox Core Controller is one of the most comfortable controllers for those longer sessions.

Button Layout and Design?

With Nintendo continuing to be different just for the sake of doing so, it’s important to make sure the button is laid out in a way you’re familiar with.

Xbox’s controller layout has not changed much since the very first console. If you are a console gamer at all you’ll be right at home with the Xbox Core Controller. If you are coming from a PlayStation controller, while the buttons have different symbols on them you’ll find that it’s easy to adapt because the buttons directly map onto each other. The square button becomes the x button, the triangle button becomes the y button, and so on.

Are There Any Additional Features?

Sometimes controllers have additional features that go unnoticed. It would be unfortunate to own a controller without knowing the full range of its features.

The Xbox Core Controller’s most notable feature is its share button. The Share button enables you to effortlessly capture screenshots and recordings and share them online. The controller also features Xbox’s new hybrid D-pad and textured grip on the triggers, bumpers, and back-case. If you are using the controller on a Xbox console or PC you can even change the button mapping to something more comfortable. All of these features are easy to miss so be sure to ask about them.

Is The Controller Durable?

If you’re someone who frequently goes through controllers, it is important to make sure you ask about durability. “Is this controller going to break in the first 6 months?”

Most licensed controllers come with a warranty and Xbox is no different. That being said the Core Controller is a solid well built peripheral. Purchasing one can last you many years and withstand regular use.

Software Compatibility?

For PC gamers it is very important to make sure that the controllers you’re using don’t require any specific software or drivers for full functionality. If your controller does need these drives it’s important to ask if the drivers are available and easy to install.

Xbox Controllers are pretty much universally supported with most PC builds. Plugging in a new Xbox Core Controller will automatically install any drivers you may or may not be missing. If your operating system is up to date, you shouldn’t have to worry about installing drivers but sometimes these installs can become corrupted. If that happens you can find the Xbox Controller Drivers easily accessible on xbox.com.
