New Shantae Game Gets Funded Via Kickstarter

New Shantae Game Gets Funded Via Kickstarter

If you haven’t heard of Shantae, you haven’t been paying attention to the world of platformers. It is an awesome 2D platformer series, usually kept to handheld consoles, that has previously been published by Capcom. Now, Wayforward is trying to create a brand-new Shantae game, with the support of some fans on Kickstarter.

The team asked for 400.000 dollars to produce the game, which is surprisingly low considering they are planning to release on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and Steam. Either way, they passed their goal today, raising about 15,000 extra. The team has a lot of stretch goals, usually revolving around new characters and stages, though it seems unlikely with just 10 days left that many of these will be reached.

The Shantae: ½ Genie Hero Kickstarter has been a subject of some debate since it was announced. Many gamers are skeptical of the need for Wayforward to pursue a Kickstarter, rather than a traditional publishing agreement. On the more positive side, the Shantae team includes animators from Skullgirls , designers of Contra 4 , employees from former studios that worked on Mega Man , and much more.
