OnLive Patent Challenged

OnLive Patent Challenged

None

OnLive announced last year that it was awarded a landmark patent that allowed it to operate by providing access to cloud gaming, but there might be a small problem. T5 Labs contends they have a patent that predates the one awarded to OnLive.

Since its launch last year, the service has raised an estimated $40 million, and is valued at around $1.8 billion. If T5 Labs is successful in its challenge it will be in line to collect an enormous amount of royalties. Graham Clemie, head of T5 in England, said, “T5 labs is considering its legal rights, including deciding whether to commence a procedure in the U.S. Patent Office known as an ‘interference’ to establish that T5 labs, rather than OnLive, is the first inventor and entitled to the patent rights on video gaming inventions covered by OnLive’s USP 7,849,491.”

OnLive’s patent filing is dated December 10, 2002, while T5 Labs’ filing is dated March 1, 2002.
