Public Face of Anonymous Steps Down

None

One of the basic tenets of the group Anonymous was that it didn’t have a leader, and everyone in the group had an equal stake in its operations. However, that wasn’t exactly true. Over the years, a man named Barrett Brown became the unofficial leader and spokesperson for the group. Today, he announced that he is leaving Anonymous. However, his reason for doing so is probably not what you’d think.

In an interview with Ars Technica, Brown asserted that he wasn’t proud of what Anonymous did with OpSony (supposedly the recent PSN hack.) His words: “when we’re working to promote liberty and fight dictatorships but then [Anonymous] hops on board [and] start[s] going after an electronics firm that’s perpetrated far lesser villainy, one has to question those peoples’ priorities.”

Obviously, OpSony has caused quite a bit of dissention among Anonymous’ members, and although Brown might be the most famous of Anonymous’ disenchanted ranks, he certainly can’t be the only one who thinks this group has some strange intentions. Going after a company because of complaints about one of their consoles hardly seems like important work.
