Sony Vs. Hackers

Sony Vs. Hackers

None

A group of hackers called fail0verflow has been hard at work to crack the PlayStation 3’s security. One hacker named George Hotz recently accomplished this, allowing the console to run homebrew applications and pirated games. While fail0verflow’s and Hotz’s intentions were not to run pirated games, it is this aspect of the hack that got Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) upset enough to file a lawsuit.

The suit accuses Hotz and fail0verflow members of violating several laws, and even calls their work a “conspiracy.” The lawsuit claims, “Unless this court enjoins defendants’ unlawful conduct, hackers will succeed in their attempts to ensure that pirated software can be run on the PS3 system, resulting in the destruction of SCEA’s business.”

Hotz said he was “disappointed” in Sony’s decision, and went on to say “I have spoken with legal counsel and I feel comfortable that Sony’s action against me doesn’t have any basis.”
