Angry Birds is like the Super Mario Bros. of mobile games. Everyone with a smartphone or tablet has played Angry Birds or some variation of it, and chances are if you have kids Angry Birds is a brand your whole family is intimately familiar with. The mobile games have reached over 4 billion users, and Rovio Entertainment has put up $73 million to produce The Angry Birds Movie to cash in on its cash crow (awful pun). So far, it’s looking like the investment is going to pay off in a big way.
The Angry Birds Movie has grossed over $43 million in its opening weekend, and hit the no. 1 spot in 37 different markets. According to Rovio, “Strong critical reception and great word of mouth ignited the box office on Saturday as “The Angry Birds Movie” displayed huge increases from Friday, suggesting a long and, dare we say it, happy run for the film. Next weekend, the flock soars to even greater heights with highly anticipated launches in the United States, China, and South Korea.” This could just be the biggest kids movie of the year. If you’re looking for a fun date night this weekend or want to treat your kids to a special weekend, this might be the ticket!
